7 Chosen / 7 Escogidos
The first reading today recounts the story of the 7 chosen to be deacons in the primitive Church: called, chosen and commissioned to serve the growing community. In these weeks we celebrate Confirmation four times, not to mention the adults and teens initiated at the Easter Vigil: 17 in all. 43 teens will be confirmed on May 1st. What growth and witness of commitment! Are we ready to receive them and incorporate them into the community? How can we do that?
One way to incorporate new members is to actually receive them. When I baptize and confirm at the Sunday liturgies, I invite the individuals to come stand outside with me after the liturgy. Why? So those who are present at the Liturgy might congratulate them. I am happy to be greeted! Thank you! I invite you (ALL!) to extend a welcome to the newly committed as well.
I remember once when I asked Vicky Jurado why she didn’t greet people at the door (as an usher). She answered, “Why would I? I don’t know them!” Exactly the reason to do so – we don’t know “them.” But then we are the unknown “them” to them as well– No?!?!?!
Who were the seven called forth? They were new and committed members of the early Church. Here are the new members of the present Church. Let’s welcome them, and invite them into our parish organizations and ministries. Call Benito Quesada, Melinda Casillas, Laura Avalos and Mike Lara! Get their names and phone numbers. Invite them into the Holy Name, Guadalupanas, Youth Ministry, Catechesis, Carmelitas, YuFra, St Vincent, SFO, Lectors, Communion Ministers, Home Visitors, Music Ministry, servers, Festival, Spanish Market, the ACTS process,………………………
Call and Choose!! Invite and Include!! Why else have “they” come?
